Breakfast is NOT the most important meal of the day; there is nothing magical about it. If you’re not hungry when you wake up, you don’t have to force yourself to eat, and you won’t lose all your progress because of it. But if you like and “have to” eat in the morning, it’s good to have a couple of go-to options that you always return to. That way, you won’t have to spend time and energy every morning thinking about what to eat, and ending up in a bakery way too often just because you couldn’t decide on it.
In addition, sustainability is crucial. When choosing good habits, as well as meals, they should be mostly healthy, but also ones you really enjoy eating because in the long run there’s no point in forcing yourself to anything. That’s not fun, and it’s definitely not sustainable. From that perspective, I don’t think plain oatmeal is something you could eat for the rest of your life, I know I couldn’t. But, oatmeal in this edition certainly is not, nor it has to be a dull, tasteless, and characterless meal. Almonds, hazelnuts, pumpkin seeds, homemade granola, blueberries, banana, cinnamon, honey are just some of the options that can complement this basic dish, and there are really many more (peanut butter, coconut bits, seasonal fruit, etc.). If I’m not eating eggs my personal habit in that regard goes in the direction of rotating this oatmeal with millet and rice grits, which on average covers 5-6 days a week, yet still leaves enough flexibility for some fun breakfasts like American pancakes from time to time, all within the framework of that golden 80-20 rule for success.
